Here at Gamertag Gaming we are constantly trying to answer and adhere to what it is our readers really want. Over the course of the past six months, we have been asked to provide our readers with a simple guide to upcoming titles.
The best way to do this is with an entire season of “5 reasons why I can’t wait for..”. Last week we brought you The Division, this week, number two in our ‘5 Reasons’ season sees us take a look at the explosive Just Cause 3.
What’s It All About?
Just Cause 3 is an upcoming open world action-adventure video game developed by Avalanche Studios and to be published by Square Enix. It is a single player game for PS4, Xbox One and PC
The game follows the same Rico Rodriguez from Just Cause 2. Rico has finally decided to pack it all in and go home, only to discover his home island is controlled by an evil dictator called General Di Ravello. In Just Cause 3, the General is hell bent on world domination and will stop at nothing to achieve it.
Enter (stage left) Rico Rodriguez. It is our job to stop him before it’s too late.
1. Enemy AI
Just Cause 3 has a level of Artificial Intelligence that would make Sonny from I-Robot blush. Each and every living thing that exists within Just Cause 3 can act in a way that is not prescripted. Enemies will assess a situation differently each time depending on the situation.
To explain this better, it’s probably easiest if I give an example. If you decide you want to drive a tank into a base, your enemies will recognise that you are now in a tank and that their small arms fire is now insufficient to the threat. They will instead find hard cover and switch to anti tank weapons and tactics.
This alone rockets Just Cause 3 into the new generation of gaming. The game is now infinitely more complex, and all the more fun for it. It is no longer as straightforward as jumping in a tank and destroying everything, as now your enemy is better equipped and entirely able to take you down!
This means combat strategies and tactics are a vital part of the gameplay, or just explosions, and lots of them!
2. The Wingsuit
Superman has a new look. A new feature to Just Cause 3 is that Rico now has a permanently equipped Wingsuit. This allows the player to glide across the terrain much easier than in previous games, and without the need for the parachute.
The parachute still remains vital to Rico but the new suit allows an almost superhero like navigation. Using the Wingsuit and grapple hook together means you can now travel even further across the terrain.
New and improved destruction has been added to this game, with options to destroy objects like Bridges and Statues. The freedom to choose how and what you destroy is vast.
Your imagination is your only limitation to destruction in Just Cause 3. One element to destruction I particularly like in this third edition is the the grappling hook now has more than one grapple line. This means, in short, that you can set an anchor point, connect the lines to an object, structure or vehicle and then retract the lines toward the anchor points. This will pull, throw or destroy whatever is attached to the lines. You can even pin people, animals or vehicles to walls!
In perfect Just Cause fashion this often results in a massive explosion. I imagine people will be setting up a lot more explosions from now on!
Often what makes a game unique and enjoyable is different dynamics for one piece and Just Cause 3 has thousands. In this latest edition, instead of just having one animation for the destruction of property, Avalanche have created a multitude of new physics that allow for unique and realistic destruction.
Looking at a bridge for example, the player can now destroy a bridge in whichever way they please and the animation of destruction will tailor itself to that exact style. Take out the supports with a rocket launcher or take out a section with C4, whichever way you go the game engine will blow it to order!
Also, within these new and improved dynamics are improved stunts. Instead of being fixed in one place like in previous games, now when you try a stunt on a vehicle, like climbing out and standing on top, you can walk around wherever you please.
5. Destructible Vegetation
This really is cool and just goes to show that sometimes simplicity is the key. All vegetation that exists within the map, like flowers and trees are now entirely destructible. This means that you can now plough through fields, meadows and forests smashing and scrawling pictures or patterns as you go.
While this is fun, it does also add an element of realism to the game, rather than just having plants and flowers which can withstand anything. I give it ten minutes post release until someone draws something rude… you players know who you are.
To finish off, I will leave you all in the capable hands of Square Enix and Avalanche as they showcase their latest gameplay reveal. Hold on tight!
That concludes my list for Just Cause 3, of course there were many, many other elements I wish I could fit into this list. Is there anything specific that you have seen that you can not wait for in Just Cause 3? Comment below.
