The announcement earlier this year that Hideo Kojima was to part ways with Konami and the Metal Gear Solid franchise was news that rocked an entire generation of gamers.
“After we finish MGSV, Mr. Kojima and upper management will leave Konami. They also said “their contract ends in December,” Anonymous.
Hideo Kojima joined Konami back in 1986. For gamers new and old, his departure from Konami signifies the end to an entire era of gaming. Come the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain and the permanent departure of Hideo Kojima, he will have given us a total of three decades loyal service.
He’s Sharp as a Tack
It would appear however that Hideo Kojima was aware of this impending doom as early as August 2014. At this stage he and his studio were still amid the development stages of his Metal Gear Solid 5 title, working on both The Phantom Pain and finishing up Ground Zeroes.
As one of the world’s most iconic names in video game development, it now seems that Hideo Kojima was not to be denied one last hurrah and the chance to hail a final goodbye to his fans.
One loyal fan, TimeSplitter88 seems to have stumbled onto this brilliant and at times extremely touching thank you message from Hideo Kojima. The message appears to have been recorded and planted by the Director himself within the Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Deja Vu Mission.
The Deja Vu Mission is a Playstation exclusive in which players enter the body of the original Metal Gear snake and basically are able to recreate iconic scenes from the original title.
Players must collect all nine of the X.O.F. Unit Patches in Ground Zeroes to gain access to this mission. The mission objective is to recreate seven ‘key’ or legendary scenes from the original game.
Look a little closer and you will see that there is also a submission attached to the Deja Vu operation, in which players are ordered to find all the Metal Gear title logos from start to finish. These logos are hidden throughout the Ground Zeroes world.
When the player finds the hidden logos they seem to vanish before our eyes. It’s almost like a direct reference of what has occurred in recent times. Konami have systematically removed all Kojima Productions branding from The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. Not only have they deleted the name from Kojima’s current works but they have even removed his name from all previous titles.
“You might be able to erase the marking, but the memories will never disappear.” – Kaz MGS5GZ
What is funny is that when the player finds other title names that Kojima had no hand in Kaz is quick to snub the attempts of others to replicate true Metal Gear Greatness. “Looks like that’s nothing special…”.
Once the player had removed all the markings that are to be found, you hear another message that resonates deep inside the heart of Metal Gear fans.
“You erased all the markings; but everyone of them will always be with you”
It is after this statement that a voice can be heard, not that of Kaz. The voice interrupts Kaz’ voice over role and chimes;
“You seem to be a fan of Hideo Kojima games… Thank you for all your support”
The Gameplay: The Writing’s on the Wall
It was our pleasure Hideo Kojima, saying goodbye doesn’t mean anything. It’s the time we spent together that matters, not how we left it. It’s always difficult to see the end of an entity that has embedded itself into so many of us, especially when one has spent such a long time, literally decades, in the case of a Metal Gear. We have been inside the characters; we have suffered and celebrated with them. We saved the world!
So, it may be time to say farewell to Metal Gear, but goodbyes are sad and I’d much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure, a new Kojima title. Bring it on Hideo your loyal fans await!
