We are now just days away from full Xbox One backwards compatibility. Soon all of you Xbox One owners will have the ability to play many of your favourite Xbox 360 games on your shiny new console.
Earlier today, Microsoft published a new overview video; the video explains how it all works. The video should answer any and all of the questions you may have regarding the backward compatibility. It features Microsoft legend Larry “Major Nelson” and the always charismatic FLitz from Smosh Games.
The update will appear on your dashboard next week on November 12th. The new dashboard will support an all new tab that will direct you to the backward compatibility menu. This tab will then display the Xbox 360 titles you have available via digital download. The games for which you have as a physical copy however, you will need to pop the disc in the drive every time you want to play, as per usual.
You will also have the ability to control your Xbox One via the old Xbox 360 display dashboard. Pressing the menu buttons on your Xbox One controller simultaneously will open up the 360 menu. This will allow you to navigate your way through your Xbox One with one of the most popular gaming dashboards in gaming history. This menu will also allow players to utilise all the killer Xbox 360 features that the One didn’t integrate upon it’s launch.
In addition, to this you will also be able to utilise all the next gen features whilst playing your Xbox 360 games. This includes the Game DVR and screenshot functions. And as long as you have saved your 360 games in the cloud you will be able to pull all saved content straight down onto your Xbox One.
There will be over 100 Xbox 360 games available next week with new games added to the roster every month – come November 12, you will be able to play both generations of games on one console.
The full list will release on Monday, November 9. If there is a game not on the list that you really want to play on your Xbox One, do not despair – Microsoft have a webpage dedicated to voting in games for backward compatibility.
The Voters Top Pick
Microsoft stated that although they cannot promise that all games submitted will become available, they will work hard to make as many of our favorite Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One. The top 10 games on the voters list so far are –
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II (108,095),
- Red Dead Redemption (99,009),
- Skyrim (96,290),
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (85,967),
- Halo: Reach (83,813),
- Call of Duty: Black Ops (75,055),
- Fallout 3 (65,509),
- Gears of War 3 (64,133),
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (62,483),
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (56,668)
We are committed to delivering upon your ideas that are directly actionable. Of course, your great ideas do take time to design, develop, test, and deploy to Xbox, but we’ll be sure to update entries when we announce or release a suggestion. – Xbox backward compatibility team
Ushering in a New Era
It’s a defining moment in Microsoft’s gaming history. Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg thinks that this move will increase player migration from Xbox 360 to Xbox One this holiday period and will set the system apart from its rivals.
Xbox One will soon be the only modern gaming machine that offers backward compatibility to it’s players.
“I think it’ll be tremendous. It’s another differentiator for us,” he said. “We’re going to be the only next-gen console delivering backwards compatibility.” – Aaron Greenberg
Soon we will be able to experience the greatest in gaming lineups in Xbox history – all exclusively on Xbox One. It truly is becoming the all in one entertainment system they promised upon its launch. Full review coming!
I cannot wait to load up and start playing some of my old favourites. Microsoft are making it harder and harder for me to leave my house – I need groceries! Looks like I have a few days to stock up on supplies before the world’s greatest gaming session gets under way.
I have to say I am looking forward to getting back into some classic Call of Duty or maybe a bit of Mass effect – but which first!?
